Starting and stopping the mail server

    You need to start your AppleShare IP mail server before users can use any mail services. You need to stop the mail server to perform backups of the mail database or to change mail server settings.

Starting the mail server

    To start the mail server:
    1 Open Mac OS Server Admin and log on to the server you want to administer.
    2 Press the Mail Services button and choose Start Mail Server.

Stopping the mail server

    If you plan to turn off mail services for an extended period of time, notify users before you stop the mail server.

    To stop the mail server:
    1 Open Mac OS Server Admin and log on to the server you want to administer.
    2 Press the Mail Services button and choose Show Connected Users.
    Check to be sure mail services are not in use.
    3 Press the Mail Services button and choose Stop Mail Server.

Setting the mail server to start up automatically

    To make the mail server start up automatically each time your computer starts up:
    1 Open Mac OS Server Admin and log on to the server you want to administer.
    2 Press the Mail Services button and choose Mail Server Settings.
    3 Select the box labeled "Start AppleShare IP Mail Server at system startup."
    4 Stop and start the mail server.
